Uttar Pradesh police arrested a Darbhanga lawyer from Lucknow’s Alambagh area on Saturday night on the charge of planning to create trouble in Patna during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on July 12 and handed him over to Bihar police.

Naveen Arora, additional director general of the anti-terrorist squad of UP police, said: “We had received a request from Bihar police to arrest Nooruddin Zangi, an active member of Popular Front of India (PFI). He had made a failed attempt to disrupt the prime minister’s programmes in Patna. He had also imparted training to some members to successfully derail the prime minister’s programmes.”

“Bihar police was here and shared information about Zangi with us. We arrested him from a place near Mawaiya Railway Station in the Alambag area of the state capital,” said Arora.

Prashant Kumar, additional director general of police (law and order), said: “Zangi was hiding in Lucknow.”

A source in the police claimed that Zangi had joined the PFI in Darbhanga in 2005 after his meeting with district PFI chief Mohammad Sanaullah.

Zangi had done his LLB from CM Law College, Darbhanga, in 2017 and contested the Assembly election from the Darbhanga seat in 2020 as a nominee of the Social Democratic Party of India. He had got only 523 votes.

He was staying in a cheap guesthouse near Charbagh Railway Station in Lucknow.
