The migrant tragedy continues to unfold on India’s highways and railway tracks as the lockdown approaches the 50th day. In spite of the letter-writing skills of Union home minister Amit Shah, who had last week reminded the Bengal government of the need to expedite the return of the workers and declared that he was working late nights, the plight of the migrants has remained unabated. The migrant torment, which began abruptly when Prime Minister Narendra Modi activated the shutdown with a four-hour notice in the fourth week of March, has come to symbolise how badly the lockdown was planned and sprung on the country by the Centre.
