Calcutta, Aug. 10 :     Coming under severe pressure from within, one-and-a-half months before the elections, the West Bengal Congress today expelled three of its members and censured six others on charges of anti-party activities. The decision was taken at a stormy meeting of the state election committee this morning. A majority of those present pressed for stern action against the six, including Intuc chief and party legislator Subrata Mukherjee, after clinching the expulsion issue of the three. Mukherjee boycotted the meeting in protest. While party legislator Suniti Chattoraj and Congress nominee for Joynagar Gobinda Naskar were expelled for joining Mamata Banerjee?s Trinamul Congress, the action against Buluram Pradhan followed his switch to the BJP. Similarly, three Congress legislators ? Mukherjee, Pankaj Banerjee and Sadhan Pande ? were censured for showing taking a pro-Mamata line publicly. Action was also taken against former Congress Legislature Party chief Zainal Abedin and sitting legislator from Raigunge, Dilip Das, for siding with Sharad Pawar?s Nationalist Congress Party. ?We will take action against all the six after getting a green signal from the high command,? said state Congress president A.B.A.Ghani Khan Chowdhury. Chowdhury, who has been authorised to deal with the matter, said tonight that he would leave for Delhi tomorrow to apprise party president Sonia Gandhi of the prevailing state of affairs in the state unit. According to Chowdhury, explanations would be sought from the six for their pro-Mamata pronouncements in recent times. ?They have harmed the party?s prospects by continuously speaking in favour of Mamata who has aligned with the BJP,? he said. Earlier, working president Priya Ranjan Das Munshi said the party was also monitoring the activities of some other leaders to prevent a steady exodus. ?This is an unfortunate development,? he added. The state Congress today redrafted its list of nominees for all the 42 parliamentary and five Assembly seats where bypolls will be held along with the October 3 general elections. Unable to rope in unwilling party workers to enter the electoral fray, the state Congress has chosen a maximum number of sitting party legislators as nominees for the parliamentary seats. That the party was not at all serious on screening the poll nominees was evident from its decision to field a nondescript south Calcutta district president Partha Roychowdhury to take on the high-profile Mamata in Calcutta South. Roychowdhury was chosen in place of Maitri Saha. Another disconcerting factor is the absence of adequate number of women candidates. Only three women have been chosen to contest the polls. Gobinda Naskar for Mathurapur: Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said Gobinda Naskar has been chosen as party nominee for the Mathurapur Lok Sabha seat. Naskar, a former Congress vice-president, switched to Mamata?s camp only last week.
