Begusarai superintendent of police (SP) Yogendra Kumar said: “Prima facie, our investigations have revealed that the motive was to spread terror in the area. We are further probing different aspects related to this.”

The firing incident had spread panic in Begusarai and adjacent districts because it was not related to any enmity or an attempt to rob anybody. People were randomly shot at. It had also revealed serious laxity on the part of the police after which seven officers were suspended.

According to the police, the four arrested persons have been identified as Yuvraj, Sumit, Keshav alias Naga alias Nagawa, and Arjun alias Chunchun.

“We identified Yuvraj on the basis of CCTV footage we had procured during our investigation. He was traced and arrested.

“He confessed to his involvement and said that the person in yellow T-shirt, riding pillion on his bike was Sumit. We arrested him also,” the Begusarai SP said.

The police also recovered two country-made pistols used in the incident, five bullets, the yellow T-shirt worn by Sumit, three motorcycles and four mobile phones.

“During interrogation, Yuvraj and Sumit revealed the involvement of two more persons who were on another motorcycle. Our teams are working to arrest them. They also told us about the involvement of Keshav and Chunchun in the planning of the incident. They all were in touch with each other via phone earlier and also during the incident,” Kumar said.

The police arrested Chunchun from Bihat in Begusarai. Keshav had escaped by that time, but a special police team nabbed him from Jhajha railway station in Jamui district.

He was planning to flee from the state.

“Chunchun is an accused in six grave offences, including one related to murder.

He has come out of jail recently. Keshav is an accused in two cases of the Arms Act and had previously been to jail for possessing illegal weapons. Sumit is also an accused under the Arms Act,” Kumar said.

The Begusarai SP added that more persons could be involved in the incident and investigations were under way.
