Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha resigned from his post on Thursday following the party’s continued defeat in the state and a disappointing performance in the elections.

Jha made the announcement after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday. The party’s Bihar in-charge Bhakta Charan Das was also present on the occasion.

The move comes amid talks of major organisational revamp in several states where the party has fared poorly in the past years.

Jha had been appointed to the post in September 2018, which normally has tenure of three years. “I had handed over my resignation letter to my senior leaders in September 2021 after my three-year term was over,” Jha told The Telegraph over phone from Delhi.

Senior leaders in the Congress said that Jha’s resignation was not accepted last year and he was asked to continue. However, this time he was called to Delhi for the purpose.

“The party has already appointed new Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs for Punjab and Uttarakhand. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and a few other states are next in the queue,” a senior Congress leader confided to this newspaper on the condition of anonymity.

Party sources said that former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, AICC general secretary and former Union minister Tariq Anwar, former Nagaland governor Nikhil Kumar, former Lok Sabha member Ranjeet Ranjan, MLC Prem Chandra Mishra, MLAs Rajesh Ram and Vijay Shankar Dubey are among the front runners for the Bihar PCC president.

Das is said to be rooting for Rajesh Ram for the post.
