The Bengal Assembly on Monday adopted a unanimous proposal to felicitate this year’s Nobel prize winner Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, the second from the state to get the world’s most prestigious award in economics.

The Assembly also passed a resolution unanimously to congratulate Banerjee and it would be sent to his family.

While participating in the discussion to congratulate Banerjee for winning the award, veteran Congress MLA Asit Mitra proposed the felicitation of the economist. He also urged Speaker Biman Banerjee to request him to deliver a lecture in the Assembly.

The Speaker accepted Mitra’s proposal.

He also promised to initiate communication with Banerjee to arrange for a grand felicitation by the Assembly during his next visit to Calcutta.

State parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee, who was the mover of the resolution, suggested that the Assembly library should have a collection of all three books of Banerjee and his wife Esther Duflo, who is the co-winner of the prize.

Speaker Banerjee accepted Chatterjee’s proposal and asked the Assembly secretary to make arrangements to buy the books and requested the legislators to visit the library to enrich themselves.

Although the initial list of speakers on the discussion on the resolution did not have any names from the BJP, the Speaker later allowed BJP legislative party leader Manoj Tigga to record his views.

Tigga supported the resolution.
