The additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Alipore issued an arrest warrant against cricketer Mohammad Shami on Monday with a 15-day window to seek bail after he returns to India from West Indies.

Shami was part of the India team touring the Caribbean islands. The two-Test series against West Indies ended on Monday.

BCCI officials will talk to Shami’s lawyers to get an update, according to PTI. “We are aware of the situation... the first thing we will do on Tuesday is to speak to Shami’s lawyer. We want to get a full update on the case,” a BCCI official has told the news agency. “An official spoke to Shami on Monday. We need to be prepared for any eventuality.”

In a few days, the selectors need to be know if Shami would be available for the South Africa Test series, the official said.

In 2017, his wife Hasin Jahan had charged him and his family with mental and physical cruelty, criminal breach of trust, sexual harassment, attempt to murder, rape, grievous hurt, poisoning, common intention and criminal intimidation.

Police have interrogated him twice at Lalbazar before dropping most of the charges.

In March, the police filed a chargesheet against his brother and him for mental and physical cruelty, criminal breach of trust and sexual harassment. His parents and sister-in-law were not chargesheeted.

The charges carry a maximum punishment of three years in jail.

Once the police file the chargesheet, the complainant can raise objections on the police report.

In this case, Hasin Jahan did not raise any objection. “That proves her other allegations were false,” Shami’s lawyer Sk. Salim Rahman said. “Regarding the arrest warrant, my client has always abided by the law.... In future, too, he will act according to the law.”
