A soldier died and another was injured when an avalanche hit an army post along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Thursday, police said.

The avalanche struck the post of Rashtriya Rifles in Sawjian sector in the morning. It buried two soldiers, following which a rescue operation was launched immediately, the police said.

One jawan died on the spot and another was shifted to hospital, the police added.

Highway reopens

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, has been reopened for vehicular traffic on Thursday after a day-long closure due to snowfall, police officials said.

Over 500 vehicles were stranded at various places in Jammu and Udhampur on Wednesday.

The Mughal road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir's Shopian district, continued to remain blocked for the second day following snowfall at various places, including Pir Ki Gali.

'Due to snowfall, the Mughal road continues to remain closed. No traffic is being is allowed on the two sides', an official said.
