Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), whose electoral symbol is the broom, has been swept out of the capital and its Parliament tally has come down to one from four, all of whom were from Punjab.

AAP minister and Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai told reporters on Friday that despite the debacle, there “will not be any alliance with the Congress in the Assembly polls” early next year.

“People see the AAP as an ideal. Supporters did not like the talk of an alliance…. Several people had told me that they wanted (Narendra) Modi as Prime Minister but would vote for the AAP in Delhi,” Rai said.

According to the leader, the AAP’s focus now would be on electricity, health, education and welfare schemes.

The campaign in Delhi — in which the AAP focused on statehood — was marked by constant attacks on the Congress for not agreeing to its terms for a tie-up. The AAP had been hoping for an alliance in Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab.

In Delhi, where it had offered two out of the seven Lok Sabha seats to the Congress, the AAP lost in all seats and came second in only two. The Congress was No. 2 in the remaining five.

Three AAP candidates, including national secretary Pankaj Gupta and trade wing chief Brijesh Goyal, lost their deposits.

“The Modi-versus-Rahul paradigm worked in Delhi too. People voted to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister. Those opposed to him voted for the Congress in Rahul Gandhi’s name…. We tried to crack a seriously polarised campaign with the demand for statehood, but we could not,” Rai said.

Kejriwal is set to meet the AAP’s Delhi cadres on Sunday to discuss the results.

In Punjab, the AAP won only one seat, with Bhagwant Mann retaining Sangrur.

The party’s foray into Haryana, in alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party, remained a non-starter. The AAP contested three seats and lost all, with two candidates polling less than 1 per cent votes and another getting 1.7 per cent.
