The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid, who has been in custody for over two years, in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the riots here in February 2020. The bench had on September 9 reserved its order on Khalid's plea who had challenged a trial court's March 24 order dismissing his bail application in the case. "We do not find any merit in the bail appeal. The bail appeal is dismissed," a bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar said while pronouncing the order.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will hear on November 29 the pleas challenging the remission of sentence and release of 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gang-rape case and murder of her seven family members during the Gujarat riots.
The Indian cricket team won't be in Pakistan for the 2023 edition of the Asia Cup, Asian Cricket Council chief Jay Shah said on Tuesday. Shah's views came on the sidelines of the 91st BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai.The Asia Cup will be hosted by Pakistan and there were reports earlier that BCCI was willing to send the national team for the tournament. Shah, also the BCCI secretary, added that the Asia Cup may be played in a neutral venue and not Pakistan.
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday tabled in Assembly the reports of separate Commissions of Inquiry that looked into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the 2018 police firing at Thoothukudi in the state and in its concluding remarks said that V K Sasikala, the late Chief Minister's confidante, "have to be found fault with and investigation is to be ordered." The panel also has named others alongwith Sasikala.
The government on Tuesday hiked the minimum support price for wheat by Rs 110 to Rs 2,125 per quintal and mustard by Rs 400 to Rs 5,450 per quintal for the current crop year with an aim to boost production and income of the farmers. The decision to increase the MSPs (minimum support prices) was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to an official release, the CCEA has approved an increase in MSPs for six rabi crops for the 2022-23 crop year (July-June) and the 2023-24 marketing season.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out raids in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in connection with a case registered to probe the "emerging nexus" between terrorists, gangsters and drug smugglers. The raids were carried out at 50 places which covered residences of noted gangsters, officials said.
A helicopter ferrying pilgrims from Kedarnath temple to Guptkashi here crashed into a hill due to poor visibility on Tuesday, killing all six pilgrims and the pilot on the spot. The chopper -- Bell 407 (VT-RPN) and operated by Aryan Aviation -- burst into flames at around 11.45 am at Dev Darshini in Garud Chatti, Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh said.

Air India chief Campbell Wilson on Tuesday said the airline aims to have 30 per cent share in both domestic and international markets in the next five years. Currently, the loss-making carrier, which was taken over by Tata group in January, has put in place the revival plan 'Vihaan.AI'. Air India aims to have 30 per cent share in domestic and international markets in the next five years, Wilson, who is the MD and CEO, told reporters here. Currently, the airline has a domestic market share of 10 per cent and an international market share of 12 per cent.
