A scuffle allegedly broke out between the wrestlers staging a protest at Jantar Mantar here and some police personnel, leading to head injuries to a couple of protesters. Three people, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, were detained following the incident, police said Wednesday night.
"I was abused and pushed around by policemen. Where are the women police personnel?" asked Vinesh Phogat.
Later on, Congress had hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah and the Delhi Police under him over a scuffle between police and the wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar here.
Soon after the scuffle, the heads of 15 police districts in the national capital have been instructed to be on alert in their jurisdictions, especially in the border areas, in the aftermath of a late night ruckus at Jantar Mantar between police and some wrestlers on protest, a senior officer said on Thursday.
"Directions have been issued to all the DCPs to be on alert in their districts, especially in the border areas. They have also been asked to take special care and keep watch on roads which go towards Central Delhi," the officer said.
From politicians to protestors, everyone had their own share of opinion and agitations against the manhandling and misbehaviour of the Delhi police. But it seemed the national city's police department had a different opinion against the allegations meted out at them. Delhi Police on Thursday denied allegations that its personnel were drunk or used force against protesting wrestlers during a late-night ruckus at Jantar Mantar between police and some grapplers.
"A sufficient number of women officers were on duty during the night. On the medical examination, no police personnel were found drunk. Five police personnel sustained injuries during the scuffle."
Amidst the scuffle between Delhi police and protesting wrestlers, seven women wrestlers, who have levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking permission to file an affidavit in a sealed cover.
Later on, the Supreme Court on Thursday closed the proceedings on a plea by three women wrestlers, who have levelled sexual harassment allegations against the Wrestling Federation of India chief, after noting that FIRs have been registered and seven complainants have been provided adequate security.
"You came here with specific prayers for registration of FIR and security for the complainants. Now both of your prayers have been addressed. If you have any further grievances, you can very well approach the high court or the jurisdictional magistrate," the bench, also comprising Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, said, adding that it is closing the proceedings for now.
Claiming that the Supreme Court's decision to close proceedings on the plea of sexual harassment allegations against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is not a setback, the wrestlers on Thursday said they will continue their protest. "We respect the Supreme Court order, protest will continue," Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik said.
Curfew was clamped in 10 of Manipur’s 16 districts and mobile data services were suspended in the entire state for five days on Wednesday after the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) organised a solidarity rally in the 10 hill districts of the state opposing the demand of the majority Meitei community for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

Later on, several coloumns of the Army and Assam Rifles had to be hurridely deployed overnight to contain large-scale rioting that broke out across Manipur between tribals and the majority Meitei community, displacing over 9,000 people.
An Army helicopter crashed after a “hard landing” in a forested area in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday following a technical fault, injuring the two pilots and a technician on board, officials said.
“At about 1115 hours on 04 May 2023, an Army Aviation ALH Dhruv helicopter on an operational mission made a precautionary landing on the banks of Marua river in the Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Udhampur-based Northern Command said in a statement.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Thursday said his decision to step down from the post was taken for the future of the party and to create a new leadership.

Crisis-hit airline Go First has suspended sale of tickets till May 15 and is working to refund or reschedule existing bookings for future dates, aviation regulator DGCA said on Thursday.
"Go First has intimated that they have suspended sale of their flights till 15 May 2023 and are working to refund or reschedule for future dates, the passengers already booked to fly with them," the regulator said in a statement.
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Thursday reserved its order on crisis-hit airline Go First's plea seeking voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings.
A two-member bench headed by President Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar concluded the day-long hearing during which the Wadia group-controlled airline sought initiation of insolvency resolution proceedings and an interim moratorium on its financial obligations.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on Thursday said it has concluded the Myanmar Port sale for a total consideration of USD 30 million.
In May 2022, APSEZ had announced signing of a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) for the sale of its Myanmar Port. The SPA had certain Condition Precedents (CPs), including completion of the project and relevant approvals for smooth conduct of business by the buyer.
"Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) handled 32.3 million tonnes of total cargo in April. up 12.8 per cent over the same month last year," the company said in a statement.
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen moved the Calcutta High Court, appealing against a notice of the Visva-Bharati university that asked him to vacate 13 decimal of land at his Santiniketan residence by May 6. The central varsity, which claimed that the 13 decimal of land is under the "illegal occupation" of Sen, said that it would evict the economist if he fails to vacate it within the deadline.

The Patna High Court on Thursday ordered a stay on the caste survey being conducted by the state government.
Hearing a bunch of petitions, a division bench of Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Madhuresh Prasad directed the government to immediately stop the caste-based survey, and ensure that the data already collected are secured and not shared with anybody till final orders are passed.
"We are of the considered opinion that the petitioners have made out a prima facie case against the continuation of the process of caste-based survey, as attempted by the State of Bihar. There is also the question raised of data integrity and security which has to be more elaborately addressed by the State," the court said.
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain a petition challenging the CBFC certification granted to controversial movie 'The Kerala Story' which is scheduled for release on May 5.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandarchud said the Central Board of Film Certification has already certified the film.
"You must think of the actors, producer.... they have all put their labour. You must be very careful about staying films. The market will decide if it is not up to the mark...We are not inclined," the bench, also comprising Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala said.
Public broadcaster Prasar Bharti has decided to drop references to its radio service as 'All India Radio' and substitute it with 'Akashvani', as mentioned in the law.
"This is a very old decision of the government which was not operationalised earlier. We are now operationalising it," Gaurav Dwivedi, Chief Executive Officer, Prasar Bharati said.
