Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lambasted the previous Congress-led UPA government for its mismanagement of the economy saying the party put "family first" and left the country in 'dire straits' in 2014, but it is now lecturing the Modi government on handling the economy. India is now on the way to become the third largest global economy, she said.

Two persons were killed and three critically injured in the violence that broke out over the demolition of an illegally-built madrasa and a place for offering namaz inside its premises in the town where curfew has been imposed and shoot-at-sight orders issued. The situation in the town is under control with curfew imposed and around 1,100 police personnel deployed there, Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena said.

The Crime Branch of Mumbai police has formed two teams to probe into the sensational murder of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Abhishek Ghosalkar during a ‘Facebook Live’ by a local ‘social activist’, who also killed himself, an official said. The Crime Branch probe will focus on several aspects, including how Noronha got the weapon and who provided it to him, if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time and the questioning of people who were present at the spot when Ghosalkar was fired upon, he said.

Days after convicts in the Bilkis Bano case surrendered before jail authorities on Supreme Court orders, one of them has been given a five-day parole by the Gujarat High Court due to the death of his father-in-law, a police official said. The Supreme Court had last month quashed the remission of sentence of all 11 convicts in the 2002 post-Godhra riot case of gangrape of Gujarat woman Bilkis Bano and murder of her seven relatives.

People agitated in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas, demanding the arrest of absconding TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan and his aides. A poultry farm in Zeliakhali belonging to Hazra was also set ablaze, police said.

A day after an unsuccessful bid to march to the Parliament, protesting farmers back outside offices of local authorities in Noida and Greater Noida for a sit-in. On February 8, thousands of villagers, including women and the elderly, joined the march to press for their demands for hiked compensation and developed plots in lieu of their land acquired by local development authorities in Noida and Greater Noida in the past.

Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's party-backed independent candidates seemed to be gaining the upper hand after the results of the general elections started trickling in following unusual delays that led to allegations of rigging. There were dozens of parties in the fray but the main contest was among Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), whose candidates are running as independents, former three-time premier Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Bilawal Zardari Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
