Off to a flying start, ISRO ushered in 2024 with the successful launch of its first X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer insights into black holes in the space, making the country only the second to conduct experiment into such celestial objects. The PSLV-C58 rocket, in its 60th mission, carried the primary payload XPoSat and deployed it in an intended 650 km low earth orbit.

A massive earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 hit central Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami warning and advisories for residents to evacuate. A tsunami around 1 metre high struck parts of the coast along the Sea of Japan with a larger wave expected, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Continuing with an over three-decade practice, India and Pakistan on Monday exchanged a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral pact that prohibits the two sides from attacking each other's atomic facilities. The exchange of the list took place under the provisions of an agreement on the prohibition of attack against nuclear installations and facilities, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

Jet fuel or ATF price was cut by 4 per cent, the third straight monthly reduction, and commercial cooking gas (LPG) rates were marginally lowered by Rs 1.50 per 19-kg cylinder in line with international benchmarks. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was cut by Rs 4,162.5, or 3.9 per cent, in the national capital to Rs 101,993.17 per kl, according to price notifications of state-owned fuel retailers.

US helicopters repelled an attack by Iran-backed Houthi militants on a Maersk container vessel in the Red Sea, sinking three ships and killing 10 militants, according to accounts by American, Maersk, and Houthi officials. A spokesman for the Houthis said the group carried out the attack because the ship's crew refused to heed warning calls.

Amid a raging feud between the Kerala Raj Bhavan and the ruling CPI(M), its student outfit SFI burnt a huge effigy of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan at Payyambalam beach, accusing him of 'communalising' the state's education sector. The Kerala Police have registered a case against SFI state president K Anusree and eight others for their 'dangerous act' of burning the effigy by 'using petrol'.

Jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's nomination papers for the February 8 general elections were rejected due to his conviction in the offence of 'moral turpitude' in a corruption case and other reasons, the returning officer of the National Assembly seat has said. Besides the main reason that Khan was convicted in the Toshakhana corruption case, objections were raised against his nomination papers as the proposer and seconder for the PTI’s founder did not belong to the respective constituencies.

Bangladesh's Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus was sentenced to six months in jail by a court on charges of labour law violation, a development termed as 'politically motivated' by his supporters. The Third Labour Court judge ruled that 83-year-old Yunus, who was present in the court, would serve six months of simple or non-rigorous imprisonment for violating the law as the Grameen Telecom chairman along with three other executives of the social business company.

Air India will start operating its first A350 aircraft on the domestic routes from January 22, with the first flight from Bengaluru to Mumbai. The A350-900 aircraft will have a three-class cabin configuration with 316 seats.
