Fourteen people have died and 102 others, including 22 army personnel, were missing after the cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim triggered a flash flood in the Teesta river basin. A study by an international team of researchers had warned two year ago that the South Lhonak lake in Sikkim may burst in the future and significantly impact the downstream region. State-owned NHPC's two hydro power plants in Teesta Basin in Sikkim have been affected following flash floods.

Norwegian author and dramatist Jon Fosse won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature 'for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable,' the award-giving body said. The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns (about $1 million).

The Calcutta High Court has said that the Enforcement Directorate can consider issuing fresh summons to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee if it is not satisfied with the documents submitted by him in connection with the alleged school jobs scam in West Bengal. Hearing an appeal by the Diamond Harbour MP challenging an order of a single bench that had directed the ED to ensure the investigation process on October 3 is not hampered, a division bench said the agency can fix a time limit for Banerjee to submit documents as required by it.

Police have registered an FIR against the acting dean and a doctor of a government hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded district, where 31 patients died in 48 hours, on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. They were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (common intention), the official said.

The Delhi Police called journalist Abhisar Sharma for questioning in connection with a case filed under anti-terror law UAPA, following charges that the NewsClick portal received money for spreading pro-China propaganda. Delhi Police opposed the applications filed for the supply of a copy of the FIR by NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and human resources department head Amit Chakravarty. Delhi Police has accused Purkayastha of conspiring to peddle a narrative that Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are disputed territories.
