The Ajit Pawar faction filed a caveat in the Supreme Court seeking a hearing if the Sharad Pawar group moves before it challenging an Election Commission order recognising the party led by the Maharashtra deputy chief minister as the real Nationalist Congress Party. On February 6, the Election Commission (EC) announced that the Ajit Pawar faction is the real NCP, in a major setback to party founder Sharad Pawar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress alleging that the opposition party has become outdated and has always been against any kind of reservation. Citing a letter written by Jawaharlal Nehru to chief ministers, Modi said it clearly states that the first prime minister was against reservation of any kind, especially in jobs, as it adversely affected the functioning of the government.

A Delhi court summoned Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on February 17 on a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against him over the non-compliance of its summons in a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped excise policy for the national capital. The judge had reserved the order after the ED submitted that it had concluded its arguments in the matter.

A special PMLA court extended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) remand of former chief minister Hemant Soren by five days in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam, lawyers said. "The Enforcement Directorate had prayed for seven days' remand, which we vehemently opposed. The ED was granted five days' remand," Advocate General Rajeev Ranjan told reporters.

Uttarakhand Assembly resumed the discussion on the Uniform Civil Code bill with the Opposition Congress members moving a proposal to refer the legislation to a select committee of the House. Restarting the debate in the House, Congress member from Kichcha, Tilak Raj Behar, said Article 44 of the Constitution which is the basis of the bill talks about the UCC in the context of the whole country and not just one state.

Calcutta High Court stayed a single bench order for forming a joint special investigation team (SIT) of the CBI and the West Bengal Police to probe an attack on Enforcement Directorate officials last month. On January 5, the ED officials were attacked by a huge mob when they went to search the premises of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district in connection with an alleged ration distribution scam case in the state.

At least 25 people were killed and 42 others injured in two devastating bomb blasts targeting election offices in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, a day before the general elections in the coup-prone country. Less than an hour later, another bomb blast took place outside the election office of a Jamiat-Ulema Islam-Pakistan in the Killa Abdullah area claiming the lives of eight people and injuring 12 others.

Hamas has proposed a ceasefire plan that would quiet the guns in Gaza for four-and-a-half months leading to an end to the war, in response to a proposal sent last week by Qatari and Egyptian mediators and backed by the United States and Israel. The proposal would see militants exchange remaining Israeli hostages they captured on Oct. 7 for Palestinian prisoners.

In a series of disturbing incidents, an Indian doctoral candidate was found dead at Purdue University in Indiana while another Indian IT student was brutally attacked near his house in Chicago. According to The Purdue Exponent, a news agency independent of the university, Sameer Kamath, 23, a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering, was found dead in Warren County on February 5, the mechanical engineering head Eckhard Groll announced on February 6.
