Biopics based on the heroics of the armed forces are inspirational and always instil a feeling of patriotism. They make us value the sacrifices made by our heroes at the border, in the skies and on water.

With Vicky Kaushal playing Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the biggest hero of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War in Sam Bahadur, which describes the flamboyant armyman as “India’s Greatest Soldier”, we pick our recent favourite biopics based on the armed forces.

SHERSHAAH

Shershaah, based on the heroics of Kargil martyr Vikram Batra, stood out for its emotional story and credible action scenes. Played by Sidharth Malhotra, the Vishnuvardhan film was inspirational and showed Batra in all his on-field glory, valour, selfnessness and leadership skills, but also struck a chord with all kinds of audiences for the way in which it depicted him in his personal life. PIPPA

In this recent release, Ishaan plays Captain Balram Singh Mehta of the 45 cavalry regiment that was successful in securing a crucial sub-victory for his side in the 1971 war. This coming-of-age war film, thought sketchy in parts, is an engaging watch which shows a soldier’s strong will and dedication. (Streaming on: Prime Video)

GUNJAN SAXENA: THE KARGIL GIRL

Another Kargil War story, depicting the inspirational tale of a young officer who made history by becoming the first Indian female Air Force officer to fly in the combat zone, the never-say-die attitude of Gunjan Saxena was brought live on screen by Janhvi Kapoor in probably her best performance so far. This film stands out for the sense of patriotism it evoked as well as for its messaging that women can fit into any role. (Streaming on: Netflix)

MAJOR

Based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnanm who was martyred in the 26/11 Mumbai carnage, the film is headlined by played by Telugu actor Adivi Sesh. With a story which will bring on tears and ignite anger in every Indian, Major won praise for its strong emotional connect and for being a befitting tribute to a breavheart. (Streaming on: Netflix)
