Breaking out of his teenybopper image, Parth Samthaan is all set to portray the intense Anurag Basu in Ekta Kapoor’s reboot of Kasautii Zindagii Kay. The serial that starts airing on STAR Plus from September 25 has Parth and Erica Fernandes playing the star-crossed lovers, Anurag and Prerna. t2 caught up with the actor at Taj Bengal for a chat.

Ushnota Paul:

You’ve big boots to fill as Anurag Basu. Are you scared of how the audience will accept the reboot?

Parth Samthaan :

I’m not scared but I’ve heard a couple of people saying very confidently, “It’s Kasautii..., so you guys will go through it.” It doesn’t mean that it becomes easy for us. It means there’s a certain amount of pressure. If it doesn’t work, there are a lot of people to put you down at the same time saying, “We had said it before. Why did you make it again?” We don’t want that. We just have to make sure that we give our 100 per cent... the rest I’m sure that Ekta ma’am, STAR Plus and Balaji Telefilms have taken care of. Very rarely would you see love stories working because on TV you see more of family dramas or mythologies. Love stories are a great way to balance all the genres. I feel we’ll have a great show. People will like it.

Ushnota Paul:

Did you watch Kasautii... as a kid?

Parth Samthaan :

The only part I remember is seeing people getting married and re-married (laughs)! But besides that, as a kid, you don’t understand anything. You just walk across the living room where your mother and sister are watching it. That time Balaji shows were a rage. Not just Kasautii... but also Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kkusum and Kutumb… see I know all these names even though I didn’t watch them!

Ushnota Paul:

Is your mother ecstatic, now that you’re the new Anurag?

Parth Samthaan :

Oh, yes! Right after she saw the promo of Shah Rukh Khan introducing Anurag and Prerna, she got really excited. She told me, “SRK is introducing you! What more do you want?” She thinks that the show will do great. She has seen Kasautii... and other Balaji shows before. The relatives who stay right across our house in Pune were big fans of Balaji serials during Kasautii... times. I remember a cousin of mine who was born at that time was named Mihir (after Mihir Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi). Now you can understand the kind of strong following that Balaji shows had! I feel obliged and honoured to be given such a responsibility and role and I hope I justify that in the future.

Ushnota Paul:

The fact that Shah Rukh himself introduced Anurag and Prerna in the promo grabbed a lot of eyeballs…

Parth Samthaan :

It feels nice. You won’t see such love stories being introduced by someone as iconic as SRK. Nothing can go beyond him. I think he defines romance. I’ve been his huge fan when it comes to romance. Whatever I’ve learnt about love, is related to him… I’ve seen the way he expresses, the way he feels. Coming up with a promo with him was the best part, all thanks to Ekta ma’am. She has confessed a lot of times that this show was really close to her. We are just making sure that we don’t disappoint her, the audience and the channel. Right now, she has kept that faith in us and I hope we get to deliver on that. I’m really excited.

Ushnota Paul:

How did you prepare yourself for the role?

Parth Samthaan :

I’ve been preparing myself each and every day. Our director Muzammil Desai has told me clearly that it’ll at least take me a month. He told me, “Don’t worry. I’m there. I’ll guide you no matter what.” He has directed amazing shows like Kumkum Bhagya and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. He has been given the responsibility and since he’s coming from those hit shows, he knows what he’s doing. I’m just surrendering myself to the creatives and the director so that I take my own sweet time to understand my character. After a month, I’d be able to perform on my own. Right now, I’m under their guidance and they’re helping me out, which is nice.

Ushnota Paul:

It’s an intense love saga and Anurag needs to portray a lot of passion. How has it been working with Erica?

Parth Samthaan :

She’s a wonderful person, when I got to know her. I’ve known her since the past month or so and she’s very sweet and caring. She’s a wonderful actor. It’s not like we have shared a personal connection yet, but we respect each other. I hope that even in the future, we bond like this. There are many other characters in the show who are equally bubbly and co-operative — like the actors playing my parents, my siblings. They’re all jovial and we are bonding just like a family. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like that we are shooting. It’s a fun atmosphere.

Ushnota Paul:

What are the other projects that you’re working on now?

Parth Samthaan :

There are other projects but right now my focus is only Kasautii... It is now Ekta ma’am, Erica and my focus to make this show number one. We are trying our level best to make sure that people like it, watch it and follow it.

Ushnota Paul:

You’ve worked in web shows like Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan 3. TV serials vs web series — which medium do you enjoy working on more?

Parth Samthaan :

Every format is different and respected in its own way. Every format has its own audience and you play a character keeping the audience in mind. Web series is more real, subtle and more you. You can be raw and be yourself. You don’t have to stylise anything. As far as TV is concerned, in Kasautii..., we have drama in the story but we aren’t giving any over-the-top reactions that you’ve always seen over the years on TV. You’ll see while watching the show that our treatment is really fast. It’s very natural.

Ushnota Paul:

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Parth Samthaan :

Food! There’s no favourite food — I can eat everything. That is my weakness. I cannot say no to food (laughs and takes a bite of the fish he’s having).

Ushnota Paul:

Then how do you stay so fit?

Parth Samthaan :

I make sure that I don’t eat a lot. Anything in excess is not good for your health. I maintain myself by hitting the gym and by eating the right food. Right now the shoot has made my lifestyle really hectic, but it’s all about priorities. You never know when some scene requires you to show your body! You have to make sure that you’re fit. It’s not like Anurag needs to show six-pack abs but he has to be fit.

Ushnota Paul:

You enjoy a large female following. Do you have any crazy fan story?

Parth Samthaan :

Stalking has been there forever, in both social media and in real life! I remember a lot of fan encounters. But there was this one time when I was having a media interaction in a Metro in Mumbai. There were girls who couldn’t even wait for the Metro to stop! They got inside and said, “We want to meet Parth” and we freaked out. This was around two years back. My friends saw how crazy people were. One shouldn’t do this.

Ushnota Paul:

Which app are you addicted to?

Parth Samthaan :

 Instagram.

Ushnota Paul:

What’s your favourite travel destination?

Parth Samthaan :

My favourite is Europe. And I really want to go to Auckland in New Zealand and Australia.

Ushnota Paul:

Who’s your biggest inspiration?

Parth Samthaan :

There are many — I take inspiration from my mother, some close friends, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan… and I get to learn something from every film of Ranbir Kapoor.
