Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick bagged the trophy for Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards, held at Dolby Theatres in Los Angeles on Monday (IST).

The sequel to the 1986 film, Top Gun, was nominated under six categories — best picture, adapted screenplay, film editing, sound, music and visual effects. Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor received the Oscars statuettes for their work in the film.

“Thank you to everyone who saw and heard this film together in theatres,” Nelson said in his acceptance speech.

Cruise, 60, the lead actor of the film, gave the ceremony a miss.

Singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, who was nominated in the Best Original Song category for the song Hold My Hand from the film, delivered a surprise performance on the Oscars stage. It was a stripped-down version of the original and won her a standing ovation after the performance.

Gaga’s performance was dedicated to Tony Scott, director of the original Top Gun (1986).

Top Gun: Maverick was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2022 with a lifetime collection of USD 1.48 billion.
