It’s a double celebration for National Award-winning filmmaker Suman Ghosh as two of his works — Kabuliwala and Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen — received top honours at the Indian Film Festival of Houston organised from February 23 to 24.

While Kabuliwala has been adjudged the Best Feature Film, Aparna Sen, Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen has received the Best Documentary Award at the festival held at Asia Society Texas Center.

“Glad to have received the Best Feature Film for ‘Kabuliwala’ and the Best Documentary for ‘Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen’ at the Indian Film Festival of Houston organized by the Asia Society Texas. It was strange to win in the two categories - but I will take it. A huge thank you to all my team members..,” the Podokkhep director posted on Facebook, along with a picture of the two trophies.

Based on Rabindranath Tagore's eponymous short story, Kabuliwala features Mithun Chakraborty as Afghan dry fruit seller Rahmat Khan. After a successful theatrical run in India, the film released in the US last month.

Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen is a documentary on filmmaker Aparna Sen which had its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2024. Last year, Ghosh’s second Hindi feature The Scavenger of Dreams starring Sudipta Chakraborty and Shardul Bhardwaj had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.
