A.R.G.U.S. head Amanda Waller sends supervillain Harley Quinn and other Suicide Squad members — Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface and King Shark — on a peacekeeping mission to a world filled with blood-thirsty beasts in the trailer of DC, Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio’s Suicide Squad Isekai anime.

Dropped by DC on Thursday, the one-minute-44-second-long video begins with Gotham city’s ‘Clown prince of crime’ Joker fleeing in a car with his lover, the neurotic anti-heroine Harley Quinn, after triggering an explosion in a tall building. “The world we know is so hideous, and above all, unfair,” Joker says with a tinge of pessimism while holding Quinn on the edge of a building. In the subsequent scene, we see Amanda Waller assigning a special mission to five supervillains, including Quinn, who will be sent to another world (Isekai).

Isekai refers to a genre of Japanese fiction, particularly in anime and manga, where protagonists are transported from their ordinary world to a fantastical or parallel universe.

The mission, as revealed in the trailer, is to bring about peace to a dilapidated world where a kingdom and an empire has been waging war against each other for decades. Since it is hard to trust the supervillains, the royal family in the Isekai world remains skeptical. However, the Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag suggests that they should befriend the royal family before taking any actions against the enemies.

The trailer ends with high-octane scenes of Quinn and other Suicide Squad members fighting monsters as the ending theme of the series Go-Getter by popular YouTuber Mori Calliope plays in the background.

Anna Nagase, who is known for voicing Riko Amanai from Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 (2023), is the voice actor for Quinn in the anime. She will be joined by Yuichiro Umehara’s Joker, who has previously voiced the titular character of the anime Goblin Slayer (2018).

The story has been written by the creators of the 2021 sci-fi anime Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song, Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara. It is created by Japanese animation studio, WIT Studio, that is well-known for animating the first three seasons of Attack on Titan (2013-19), Spy x Family (2022) and Ranking of Kings (2022).

The opening theme of the anime is called Another World and is performed by Tomoyasu Hotei, who is best known for his song Battle Without Honor or Humanity, used in Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 feature film Kill Bill.

Suicide Squad Isekai anime is slated to release this year.
