Shakira was nominated for four VMA awards this year. Other than being nominated for Best Artist of the Year and Best collaboration for TQG, the pop legend also received two more nominations in the Best Latin category for her Karol G collab and single Acróstico.

The Colombian artiste will perform on the VMA stage on the award night for the first time in 17 years. She is expected to perform her 2023 hit song TQG, which featured a collaboration with Karol G and maintained a popularity streak at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became an instant fan-favourite and fetched her the title Latin Woman of the Year by Billboard.

The 46-year-singer won her first VMA in the International Viewer's Choice (Latin America North) category in 2000 and has received four VMAs throughout her career.

Shakira will be the second Latina artist to win a VMA after singer-actor Jennifer Lopez, who won the award in 2018. She will follow the consecutive wins of Rihanna, P!nk, Lopez, Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj from 2016 till 2022.

The Video Vanguard Award has always been accompanied by a performance from the recipient. On the professional front, Shakira has emerged as the first female vocalist to make it to the top 10 list with her Spanish-language track Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53. It also set 14 Guinness World Records, including the most-streamed Latin song on Spotify in a day.

The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony will be airing on MTV’s network channel on September 12 at 8 pm EST.
