S.S. Rajamouli shared videos of the Broadway musical adaption of his 2022 period action drama RRR by Takarazuka Revue, an 110-year-old Japanese all-female theatre troupe, on Friday.

“It's an honour that our RRR has been adapted as a musical by the 110 year old Takarazuka company,” the 50-year-old director wrote alongside the videos, thanking the Japanese audience for “embracing the Broadway play of RRR just like the film itself”.

Rajamouli, who attended the musical show in Japan, praised the theatre actresses for their “energy, talent, and meticulousness in the show”. He signed off by writing “arigato gozaimasu”, which is the Japanese phrase for “thank you”.

The first video shows an auditorium full of people clapping after the musical performance. Rajamouli can be seen bowing his head to thank the audience. He also received a standing ovation while exiting the venue, shows the second video.

In one of the pictures, Rajamouli, sporting a blue shirt and a multicolour scarf, strikes a pose with the theatre actresses who brought his film to life on stage.

Takarazuka Revue, founded in 1921 by Ichizou Kobayashi, has five troupes — Flower, Moon, Snow, Star and Cosmos — represented by the colours pink, yellow, green, blue and purple. Apart from the troupes, there are superior members, known as Senka, who perform with any of the groups whenever their expertise is required.

Rajamouli is currently visiting Japan with his son S.S. Karthikeya for special screenings of RRR, his blockbuster film about two freedom fighters which is making waves in Japan.

Headlined by Ram Charan and Jr NTR, RRR also features Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt. The film made history when its Naatu Naatu song bagged an Oscar in the best original song category in 2023.

Apart from attending the RRR screenings, Rajamouli and Karthikeya have been actively interacting with fans and sharing updates about the filmmaker’s upcoming SSMB 29 starring actor Mahesh Babu.
