Actress Priyanka Chopra on Monday dropped the trailer of Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill a Tiger, which she executive produced along with Dev Patel, Rupi Kaur and Mindy Kaling.

“Is there something fundamentally wrong with our country?” we hear in a voiceover wondering about the safety of women in India at the beginning of the trailer. We also see a farmer, Ranjit, running from pillar to post to seek justice for her daughter, who was brutally gangraped. Then the scene shifts to the victim, still a schoolgirl, who says she was threatened by the rapists to not mention a word about the incident to anybody.

Ranjit, however, continues to fight for justice even in the face of social taboo and constant threats from the perpetrators. “When I think of my daughter, my fear goes away,” he says.

The trailer also shows a woman asking a bunch of village women about their thoughts on the rape of the Ranjit’s daughter. The only reply she gets is that the girl should be married to her rapist.

Priyanka dropped the trailer a day after she shared the news that Netflix will stream the “truly remarkable” film. “I’m so proud to join the incredible team of the Academy Award nominated documentary @tokillatigerdoc , and to announce that @netflix has acquired the global distribution rights to this powerful feature directed by @nishappics,” she wrote alongside a screenshot of a Deadline report.

“When I first watched this film in 2022, I was immediately captivated by its poignant narrative, depicting a father’s valiant struggle within the judicial system to secure justice for his daughter,” the actress also wrote, mentioning how the film hit her on many levels, especially after witnessing the struggle of a father from her hometown, reminding her of her own father who is her “forever champion”.

To Kill a Tiger, directed by Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, was recently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film alongside Bobi Wine: The People's President, The Eternal Memory, 20 Days in Mariupol and Four Daughters.
