“There is someone behind everything...you just have to dig” — a cautionary voiceover warns in the recently dropped official trailer of the upcoming Netflix series 3 Body Problem, developed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in collaboration with The Terror: Infamy (2018) writer-producer Alexander Woo.
Sharing the two-minute-thirty-five-second-long trailer on Wednesday, the makers touted the eight-episode series as “a thrilling story that redefines sci-fi drama with its layered mysteries and genre-bending high stakes.”
The video shows that the death of thirty brilliant scientists, announced right at the beginning of the trailer, prompts an arduous effort by five scientists to stop a mysterious force from bringing about further destruction in the Derek Tsang directorial.
Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution from the 1960s, the narrative of the series draws on a secret military project aimed at establishing contact with an alien civilization.
A wall strewn with mysterious figures and text in blood, a woman with extraordinary vision, a catastrophic government venture, a journey to the past and a possible alien invasion in a seemingly volatile world promise a mind-boggling viewing experience.
Based on the international bestselling book trilogy, The Three-Body Problem by Chinese author Cixin Liu, the official synopsis of the series on Netflix reads, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”
Starring Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani and Jonathan Pryce, 3 Body Problem is set to premiere on Netflix on March 21.
