Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming directorial Amar Singh Chamkila, led by Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, is set to premiere on Netflix on April 12, the streamer announced on Monday alongside a teaser featuring a song from the film.

The movie is a biopic of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, the highest record-selling Indian artiste of the 1980s. The singer, who was killed at 27 along with his wife and two members of his band, shot to fame with his song Takue Te Takua and went on to deliver several hits.

“Maahaul bann jaata tha jab vo chedta tha saaz, kuch aisa hi tha Chamkila ka Andaaz (The atmosphere would transform when he played the instrument, that was the style of Chamkila), @imtiazaliofficial ’s #AmarSinghChamkila arriving on 12 April, only on Netflix,” the streaming platform wrote on Instagram.

The teaser begins with a voiceover by Diljit, who plays the titular character in the film. He asks someone about the kind of music his audience would like to listen to and then is seen facing a cheering crowd. At the end of the video, we get to hear the film’s theme song Chamkila, composed by AR Rahman.

Both Diljit and Parineeti have lent their voices to the songs, some of which were recorded live in front of an audience.

Soon after the teaser was posted, Imtiaz shared a behind-the-scenes picture of Diljit and Parineeti from the sets of Amar Singh Chamkila on his Instagram Stories. “Best wishes,” the 52-year-old director wrote in the caption.
