Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has now claimed the title of the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing Bryan Singer’s 2018 biographical musical drama film Bohemian Rhapsody.

Bohemian Rhapsody — a film on the life of British rock band Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury — had held the record with a box office gross of USD 910.8 million. But Oppenheimer has gone on to register a staggering box office collection of approximately USD 912.7 million so far.

Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller that revolves around renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. It narrates the story of the Manhattan Project that led to the development of the first atomic bomb. With Cillian Murphy in the titular role, the film features an ensemble cast, including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt.

Oppenheimer has also solidified its status as the highest-grossing non-superhero film in Nolan’s filmography, outshining the previous record-holder, Inception, which amassed USD 826 million at the box office.

Moreover, the Nolan directorial has claimed the position of being the second-highest grossing R-rated film of all time, trailing only behind the 2019 blockbuster Joker, which grossed USD 1.066 billion worldwide.

In addition to these accolades, Oppenheimer currently stands as the third-highest-grossing film of 2023. Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which was released on the same day as Nolan’s biographical thriller, has officially claimed the title of the biggest movie of 2023 with a colossal USD 1.416 billion in global box office earnings, followed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 1.36 billion).
