It has been a tough year for Bollywood with only a few box office hits in 2022. Several big-budget productions bombed and only a handful grabbed the attention of the audience. We pick five Hindi blockbusters of 2022 that managed to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in box office collections this year.

Brahmastra: Part 1 - Shiva (released on September 9)

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s first film together, Brahmastra: Part 1 Shiva emerged as the biggest opener for a Hindi film in 2022. The Ayan Mukerji directorial reported gross collections to the tune of Rs 36 crore in India on opening day. The fantasy saga earned Rs 431 crore gross worldwide (Rs 257.44 crore in India). The first film in Mukerji’s Astraverse franchise, Brahmastra also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in significant roles.

The Kashmir Files (released on March 11)

Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial film on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 created quite a stir across the nation. The Kashmir Files had a humble opening of Rs 3.5 crore gross in India, but the collections soon grew by leaps and bounds based on positive word of mouth. The polarising views on the film — starring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi and Puneet Issar — also brought the audience to the theatres, fetching Rs 340 crore gross worldwide (Rs 252.25 crore gross in India).

Drishyam 2 (released on November 18)

Powered by Ajay Devgn and Tab, Drishyam 2 performed exceedingly well at the box office despite being a remake of a Malayalam crime thriller of the same name. Abhishek Pathak’s thriller earned Rs 15.38 crore gross on day one — the second highest for a Hindi film, after Brahmastra: Part 1 - Shiva. Drishyam 2 has already collected Rs 222 crore gross in India (Rs 312 crore gross worldwide) within a month after release. Also starring Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla, the sequel to Nishikant Kamat’s Drishyam is still running in theatres.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (released on May 20)

Anees Bazmee’s horror comedy, a sequel to 2008’s Akshay Kumar-Vidya Balan-led blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa, worked wonders at the box office, earning Rs 221 crore gross in India (Rs 267 crore gross worldwide). At a time when Bollywood was stung by a string of flops, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 emerged as a face-saver for Bollywood. The sequel replaced Akshay with Kartik Aaryan; Tabu’s performance in the film was also highly praised.

Gangubai Kathiawadi (released on February 25)

In her first collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt slipped into the garb of Gangubai, a sex worker who became a mafia queen in Mumbai. Bhansali’s storytelling and aesthetics, and Alia’s power-packed performance were enough for the viewers to give the film a thumbs up. Gangubai Kathiawadi was the first hit Bollywood film of 2022, earning Rs 153 crore gross at the domestic box office (Rs 209 crore globally).
