The latest trailer of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal gives more clues into its lead character’s complex childhood and his obsessive devotion for his father. With flowing hair and murderous eyes, Ranbir Kapoor hacks and chops people on his way, emerging as a creature to be feared.

The three-minute-32-second-long video dropped by producer T-series on Thursday begins with an emotional moment between an adult Ranbir and his screen-father Anil Kapoor, with a throwback to an incident from his childhood when his father had no time for him. Deprived of his father’s love, Ranbir’s character grows up trying to win his affection by doing things that please him, like cutting his own hair short.

Though it’s not clear what flips the switch and turns him into a ruthless, cold-blooded ‘animal’, Ranbir’s character is seen going on the rampage repeatedly and declaring that he would eliminate anyone who tries to harm his father. This side of his personality makes his father anything but happy. “When you were back, I was so happy. But then you came and started this war,” says Anil Kapoor’s voiceover in the trailer.

The trailer also gives a glimpse into the relationship between Ranbir’s character and his wife, played by Rashmika Mandanna, who recoils at his violence and tries to knock sense into his head. The highpoint of the trailer is a face-off between Ranbir and the antagonist played by Bobby Deol, fighting each other to death on a tarmac.

Also starring Tripti Dimri and Shakti Kapoor, Animal was previously slated to release in theatres in September. To avoid a clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, the three-hour-21-minute film was rescheduled for a December 1 release.
