The Congress and the BJP filed two separate complaints in the past 24 hours with the chief electoral officer (CEO) of the state, alleging violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) by a Trinamul-backed association.

With these, at least five complaints were filed with the CEO in the past four days in the district.

Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury, the outgoing MP of Malda South, mailed a complaint to the CEO, alleging that the Trinamul Congress was violating MCC.

“The West Bengal College and University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA), which is backed by Trinamul, organised its state convention at the Gourbanga University today (Saturday). The organisation used photos of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee at the institution which is recognised by UGC. This is a gross violation of MCC and so, we mailed our complaint to the CEO,” he said.

State education minister and WBCUPA president Bratya Basu inaugurated the convention on Saturday. Sabina Yeasmin and Tajmul Hossain, ministers of state and MLAs from Malda district, were present along with the Trinamul candidates of Malda North and Malda South.

“The district election officer should not have allowed the organisation to conduct the event at the venue,” said the MP.

Ujjwal Dutta, the BJP president of Malda North (organisational) district, also filed a second complaint with the CEO on the same issue.

Manishankar Mandal, a vice-president of the association, said they had received permission from the varsity to hold the convention.

Biswajit Das, the registrar with additional charge at the varsity, said the association had been granted permission to hold the convention against fees. He said the association and teachers of 30 colleges affiliated with the varsity had sought permission.
