Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appeared to be publicly launching a threat at the "corrupt" Opposition.

Modi told a poll rally in Ajmer, Rajasthan, that he had started preparations for “bigger decisions” against corruption in the first 100 days of his third term. The Prime Minister added that whatever action against corruption had been taken in the last 10 years was just a "trailer".

Meri sarkar ka teesra karyakal bahut dur nahi hai. Pehle 100 din me bhrastachar ke khilaf BJP sarkar aur bhi bade faisle lene jaa rahi hai. Main tay karke baitha hoon, saari taiyari shuru kar di hai (The third term of my government is not far away. In the first 100 days, the BJP government is going to take bigger decisions against corruption. I have taken a call and the preparations are under way),” Modi said.

Aur isliye mai kehta hoon dus saal me jo karyavahi dekhi woh toh trailer hai, abhi bahut kuch hona baaki hai (That’s why I say that whatever action has been taken in the last 10 years is just a trailer. Much more is left to be done),” he added.

Modi has been mentioning in his recent rallies that the last 10 years of his governance were just a "trailer". However, for the first time, he has provided some details on what his agenda will be if he gets re-elected for a third term.

He has also been promising to continue his drive against corruption despite the massive Opposition outcry against “selective targeting”, but the preparation for “bigger decisions” has been flagged for the first time.

Modi stopped short of stating clearly whether he plans to enact more stringent laws against corruption.

The Opposition leaders facing action on financial corruption charges have already claimed that provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) have been made more stringent through an amendment by the Modi government, making the grant of bail by courts very difficult.

Before launching the threat, Modi lashed out at the Congress by accusing the partyof “looting” money meant for the poor.

“The Congress and its ghamandia (arrogant) alliance are holding rallies not to win elections but to save the corrupt,” he said, promising not to relent on his struggle against “bhrashtachar”.

Seeking to paint the Congress as a corrupt party, Modi told the crowd that raids on the residence of a Congress MP had yielded over Rs 300 crore in cash. “The quantity of the cash was so huge that counting machines stopped working,” he said.

“Shouldn’t I continue action against such corrupt people? Shouldn’t corruption be eradicated? Do I haveyour blessings in this drive?” Modi asked. The crowd replied: “Yes”.

Modi claimed before the crowd that he had given “full freedom” to the probe agencies but did not explain why action had been stopped or slowed against politicians who had defected to the BJP.

Data shows that of 25 Opposition leaders facing action from central agencies incorruption cases, 23 got reprieves after joining the BJP since 2014.
