An awards ceremony that fetes grit and determination and inspires many to give and share will be held this Saturday.

For over a quarter of a century, each one who attends the ceremony — be it a student, a parent, a teacher or a school principal — goes back moved, motivated and perhaps with a resolve to do something more.

IIHM presents The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence 2023, 28th edition, in association with Adamas University Kolkata and The Bhawanipur Education Society College, will be held at the Science City auditorium at 10.30am.

The inaugural ceremony was held last Saturday at South City International School. Close to 800 certificates were handed over to students, teachers, parents and institutes.

For the final ceremony on August 26, around 100 more certificates will be given.

The founder convener of the awards ceremony and a trustee of The Telegraph Education Foundation, Barry O’ Brien, said in the past few years, “the world has changed completely” and the foundation is trying to create a momentum of being conscious that a lot has to be done.

“We cannot wait for major efforts but every individual has to make that effort in their own ecosystem, in their vicinity... be conscious and empathetic and put that consciousness and empathy into action. We cannot just be applauding from the sidelines but have to jump into action,” he said.

“It is good to get patriotic with words on social media but it is far better patriotism when it is in action and in this regard for children’s education,” O’ Brien said.

It could be a small bit for a teenage girl who lost both parents to Covid in 2021 but is still resolute in her academic pursuit, or it could be for a school in rural Bengal where individuals are trying to raise money so first-generation learners can study.

The theme this year is — Responsibility of the Community towards Education.

It is time individuals took up responsibility, said an organiser.

The Telegraph Education Foundation has always believed that every drop in the ocean counts.

This year, the foundation has instituted two new awards — Thank You Bondhu and Samar Bagchi Memorial Award for Enhancement of Popular Science and Environmental Awareness. Thank You Bondhu will acknowledge common people who are not teachers but have done their bit for education.

Over the years, the stage has seen individuals and organisations coming forward to help the movement.
