Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Himachal Pradesh, released a plaque to mark the 1,000 patents it has filed.
The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell of the Shoolini University was set up just six years ago. In the short period, the institute that encourages “one student, one patent” has been noted as the third-highest patent-filing institute in the country.
The university is ranked as India’s number 1 research university on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022. A team of biologists, engineers and Intellectual Property attorneys ensure that the patents are successfully filed with the Indian Patent Office, Indian Copyright Office, Indian Industrial Design Office and Indian Trademark Office.
The patents filed are from areas such as nanotechnology, multidrug resistance, water purification, novel antimicrobial compounds, anticancer molecules, fermented food and wine, robotics, phytomedicines, new drug delivery systems, a new approach to wastewater treatment, solar energy, automobile, novel construction technology, safety equipment, biopesticides, agriculture farm machinery and farm management.
To celebrate the achievement of the students and researchers, R.C. Sobti, former vice-chancellor of Panjab University; P.K. Khosla, chancellor, Shoolini University; Atul Khosla, vice-chancellor, Shoolini University; and Kamal Dev, director, IPR, Shoolini University; released a plaque.
P.K. Khosla shared his delight at the achievement of the 1,000-patent benchmark. He hoped that it would encourage other students and researchers to engage in impactful research.
Speaking about the “amazing achievement”, Atul Khosla said: “We will work at the grassroots level to change lives and serve society.” He congratulated the staff for their role in the accomplishment.
Dev shared P.K. Khosla’s optimism about the milestone encouraging others to file more patents. He also highlighted the ‘one student, one patent’ motto promoted by the chancellor and vice-chancellor. “Intellectual Property plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country and Shoolini University will be contributing in a bigger way to enhance innovation, competitiveness and economic growth in India,” Dev said.
Most patents have been filed by the engineering department with biotechnology and basic sciences following. Of the patents filed, 549 were process patents out of which two have been granted. The institute takes initiative to bring the patents to end-users and commercialise the key patents.
