Dibrugarh University in Assam has received certification from the International Organisation of Standardisation (ISO) for its infrastructure, academic processes and administrative system, an office-bearer of the varsity said recently.

Two certificates, bearing registration numbers ISO 50001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015, have been issued by ISO to the varsity. The ISO certification indicates that the facilities at the varsity were on a par with the international standards for higher education institutions, the office-bearer added.

ISO 9001:2015 certificate is awarded to institutions for quality management, while ISO 50001:2018 focuses on energy management, with energy efficiency as its basis.

The academic and administrative processes of the Dibrugarh University along with its infrastructural setup were reviewed by a team of experts from ISO in December 2021. The team visited the varsity and surveyed its amenities and standards. During the review, the team found that all the facilities at the varsity conform to the standard set by ISO for its certification.

"It is joyous news for us. This recognition from ISO has encouraged our varsity immensely," said the vice-chancellor of Dibrugarh University, LK Nath.

The varsity’s registrar, Jiten Hazarika, said the certification marks Dibrugarh University’s presence in the “international arena”.

Dibrugarh University will have to renew its validity annually and the certification would help the institution in national-level academic evaluation, an official from the varsity said.

The ISO works on standardisation of products, firms and institutions and the validity of its certification lasts for three years. It is an international, non-governmental organisation with 167 members from different countries. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant international standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges.

Established in 1965, Dibrugarh University is one of the leading universities in Northeast India. It has a total of 177 affiliated colleges and institutes spread over nine districts of Assam. The varsity is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and is recognised by all the universities in India and abroad.

Currently, the varsity offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes under its seven faculties – Humanities and Law, Social Sciences, Education, Science and Engineering, Commerce and Management, Biological Sciences, and Earth Sciences and Energy.
