The auditorium at South City International School, Kolkata was filled with loud applause from the exuberant audience as author, philanthropist and Padma Shri awardee Mrs Sudha Murty took centre stage as the Chief Guest of The Telegraph Online 18 under 18 Awards 2024.
Addressing the full house, Mrs Murty emphasised the importance of mothers and teachers in a child's life and commended their selfless efforts in guiding them toward their goals.
"Mothers encourage their children when they face hurdles in life. Similarly, teachers also play a significant role. That is why we say, 'Acharya Devo Bhava'," she said.
"You must remember that you may have achieved a lot in your life, but you shouldn't forget the forces who are devoting their time selflessly to you," she added.
Emphasising on the importance of experience in a person's life she advised students to be prepared for the surprises life will throw at them as they grow up and face the world.
"When you grow up, there will be no syllabus and life will be full of surprises. Experience will be the only teacher, but an expensive one," she said.
"In life, every day is an examination. There, the only thing that helps you is courage. And it is developed over time," she added.
Mrs Murty also had a word of appreciation for the students who couldn't win the award.
"It is the journey that is important. The journey teaches you patience. Don't take failure as a failure. This is just a stepping stone. You may have lost the battle but you will win the war somewhere else," she said.
