A section of students pursuing the BTech programme are not attending classes at Calcutta University, prompting the university to contact the absentees to know why they are staying away from classes.

The university has a clause, which says if a student does not attend the classes for a week at a stretch CU can terminate the admission and make the seats available to other aspirants, a CU official said.

The official said the absentee students were being told about the clause.

A CU official said the flight of enrolled students was still continuing which was evident from their absence.

Amit Roy, the secretary of the engineering and science faculty, told Metro: “Some
of the students are not attending classes. We are getting in touch with them to find
out why they are abstaining”.

The university held counselling on its own last month as 68 of 253 seats remained vacant after the centralised counselling, conducted by the state JEE board.

The higher education department issued a notification on September 19 allowing
colleges and universities offering four-year BTech courses to admit students through independent counselling because many seats have remained vacant after the end of the centralised counselling.

A CU official said students might be going to the NITs which offer better infrastructure and better placement opportunities.

A BTech student in Calcutta University is required to pay Rs 5,472 in the first semester which includes components like tuition fee, laboratory fee and other components.

The students are required to pay Rs 3,622 in each of the remaining seven semesters.

NIT Durgapur charges Rs 1.25 lakh annually.

But, the flight of students suggests that the lure of studying BTech programme at a meagre cost has not been able to stop the exodus of enrolled students.

Metro reported on June 16 that CU, which started its BTech programme in 2015, shifted the engineering workshop from the Ballygunge campus to the Salt Lake campus for the benefit of BTech students.
