Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is well-recognised across the globe for his philanthropic works. Gates, who is on a visit to India was hosted by the eastern state of Odisha where Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) conferred upon him the KISS Humanitarian Award 2023 on Wednesday, February 28.

The ceremony witnessed the august presence of several distinguished guests including Minister Counsellor Graham Mayer, US Embassy New Delhi, Frank Talluto, Political Officer Hyderabad, Ananth Sukesh, Political Advisor, US Embassy New Delhi and Srimali Kari, Political Specialist US Consulate Hyderabad.

“Awarding Bill Gates with the KISS Humanitarian Award not only honours his exceptional contributions but also elevates the prestige of this recognition. His acceptance sets a new benchmark for humanitarian work globally. It is a profound honour for us that Bill Gates is joining the esteemed roster of our awardees,” said Prof (Dr) Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS.

In his acceptance speech, Gates expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and reflected on the transformative work of Dr Samanta and KISS.

"Thank you so much for this wonderful award and for welcoming me here though I should be the one congratulating you on all you have accomplished," said Gates, on receiving the award.

He also lauded Dr Samanta's vision and dedication in providing quality education to indigenous communities and highlighted the importance of civic engagement and a community-first approach to education.

The flashy event also witnessed the presence of the students and staff at KIIT and KISS along with the alumni. Prompted by a question from a KISS Alumna, Gates engaged in a conversation on general equality.
