The Xavier Society of Law and Justice (XSLAJ) organised the First Edition of their national-level trial advocacy competition, named IGNITAC'23 – Ignatius National Trial and Advocacy Competition 2023 with the kind approval and blessings from Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of SXUK and Chairperson of XSLAJ, in association with Fox & Mandal, Khaitan & Co, & Sangbad Pratidin Digital in Xavier Law School, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd November 2023. This is West Bengal’s inaugural Trial & Advocacy Competition to be held on the National Level. The competition was convened by Dr. Animesh Das, Assistant Professor of Law at Xavier Law School. Harsh Agarwal and Mobashir Anwar, students of B.A.LL.B (Hons.). programme at Xavier Law School was the student convenor of the same.

IGNITAC’23 was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of SXUK and the Chairperson of XSLAJ. The competition garnered a lively turnout, with entrants representing esteemed national, state, and private law institutions and colleges from throughout India. Some of them also availed the in-campus hostel facilities. The preliminary rounds were judged by esteemed Partners and Associates of Khaitan & Co., one of India’s oldest and leading law firms while the quarter and semifinals were judged by esteemed distinguished guests from the legal profession. The Final Round was judged by Hon’ble Justice Ashim Banerjee, Former Judge, High Court, WBCERC, and Mr. Abhiroop Mukherjee, Associate General Counsel, ITC.

The competition concluded with the award distribution ceremony. The award for the Best Team was awarded to students from Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law along with a cash prize of Rs. 60,000 followed by the students from Amity Law School, Kolkata for the Runner-Up Team along with a cash prize of Rs. 30,000. The award for the Best Memorial was awarded to students from Heritage Law School, Kolkata with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. The award for the Best Researcher along with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 was awarded to a student from Amity Law School. A student from Xavier Law School won the award for the Best Speaker with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000. A student from Xavier Law School, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata won the Best Witness Award along with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.

IGNITAC23 organized in partnership with “Gogia Law Agency”, “Vinod Publications(P) Ltd.”, “Kraving Owl Cloud Kitchen”, “TVS”, “91.9 Friends Fm”, “The Treasure Wrap” and “Corporate India” was a resounding success on both qualitative and quantitative fronts. Judges and guests lauded and expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for their ceaseless efforts in ensuring that the event offered the most favorable experience conceivable; participants returned home filled with a sense of satisfaction. The hostel-housed students also disembarked following the competition, conveying sincere appreciation to the organizing committee for their hospitality and parting ways with sincere regards.

The students involved in IGNITAC’23, in capacities of both participation and organizing, gained a great deal of knowledge from the event and rejoiced in its grand success, eagerly anticipating what more XSLAJ can contribute in order to inspire them, to pursue law, and in doing so, pave justice.

Best Team Prize awarded to Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law - RGNUL (Manya Garg, Devashree & Aanchal), along with a Grand Cash Prize worth Rs. 60,000, and an Internship Opportunity.
