Vivekananda college, Thakurpukur is organising a three-day long handicrafts exhibition from October 15 to October 18 on the college premises. According to the college authorities, the main purpose of this exhibition is to make students self-sufficient and help them earn through the sale of their own hand-made products.
A total of 31 stalls are being set up for the purpose. While 25 stalls will exhibit various handicraft products, the remaining six have been kept for students willing to sell various food items to the visitors.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by Smt Ratna Chatterjee, MLA of Behala East Assembly and President of the Governing Body of the college.
“The event is not just an exhibition, but a celebration of individuality and creativity. It symbolises the unique essence of every individual and their creative potential,” said Prof Nabakishore Chanda, the Teacher-in-charge of Vivekananda College.
“We want students to become self-dependent. Not only studies, but they should also have an overall development. Our aim is to help students earn while studying. We have organised the exhibition where students will be provided the opportunity to earn from the sale of their handicraft products and fund their education themselves,” Prof Chanda added.

Creative Swatta (Creative Entity), as the exhibition has been named, will host stalls not only from Vivekanada college, but also from several other nearby colleges, namely Sarsuna College, Vivekananda College for Women and Bhagini Nivedita Kishore Bharati College.
The college has also come up with a new art gallery where students will be able to exhibit their paintings and sell them to fund their studies. This gallery will host paintings not only by the students, but also several teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.
“We believe that every student possesses a unique creative spirit. Through this exhibition, we aim to nurture and celebrate this creativity, providing students with a platform to showcase their talent to a wider audience,” said Prof Chanda.
The exhibition will open at 11 am and close at 8 pm on the days earmarked for it. Several cultural programmes will also be held on the college premises during the three days of the exhibition, including dancing, singing and recitation by the students.
