The wintry evening of December 8th was an absolute boon for students of Classes IX and X, as St Augustine’s Day School, Barrackpore organized a special programme for the literary enthusiasts reading Shakespeare. The dramatic exposition of The Merchant of Venice was an enthralling Monologue by the eminent film and theatre icon, Mr. Ashoke Viswanathan. The analysis of the entirety of the drama intertwined with related works of other authors, thronged the auditorium of the Sukanto Sadan Hall in Barrackpore, with loud applause by students. Mr. Viswanathan’s British articulation, modulation, and theatre with wit and music left the audience in awe.

The students remained glued to their seats as they journeyed through the play and important parts of the tragicomedy with the performer. The interactive session with students was an intellectual discussion delving deep into some of the most interesting aspects of the famous play while the artist answered with utmost interest. Students and parents enjoyed the presentation. Principal, Ms. Jhuma Biswas stated, “Our objective is to help students get different learning experiences through various activities so that they are able to reinforce concepts they learn inside the four walls of the classroom. This is one such effort.”

Students and parents were extremely overwhelmed and many shared that this was the first time they witnessed something like this. The English department opined that students will fall in love with Shakespeare after such a beautiful presentation by the artist.

Ayushi Bhattacharjya of Class IX said, “His representation of the characters especially of Shylock and Bassanio brought them to life and gave reality to our imagination.” Another student, Roshni Dutta of Class X expressed, “It was an enriching session where every one of us enjoyed and learned a lot about the play, The Merchant of Venice.”

Indeed ‘An Evening with Shakespeare’ was a marvelous experience for parents and students as they witnessed Mr. Viswanathan, bring Merchant of Venice life to them.
