In a vibrant display of creativity and education, Akshar School recently hosted an exhibition centred around the captivating history of indigo. The event, organised by students and teachers, celebrated the rich cultural significance of this unique colour.

Geography and Mathematics:

A model of the "Blue City" of Jodhpur took centre stage, with students explaining the origins of its nickname. An impressive world map crafted from various shades and designs of indigo cloth pieces narrated the global journey of indigo, originating in Peru and spreading across the world. A detailed graph illustrated the ups and downs of indigo trade throughout the centuries.

History and English:

The history and English room vividly portrayed the colonial history of indigo and the 1857 indigo revolt through a tableau. The exhibit highlighted the British planters' oppression, the peasants' uprising, the role of the intelligentsia, and the significant Indigo Commission of 1860, which found the planters guilty and ended forced indigo cultivation in Bengal. The spiritual connection to indigo was also explored.

Reading Room:

In the cosy reading room, various shades of indigo set the mood. Students from grades 6 and 10 narrated folklore stories, showcasing the use of indigo by natives in India and South Africa. A special guest, Mrs. Amrita Mukherjee, shared an indigo-dyed fabric collected during her visit to South Africa.

Art:

The gallery came alive with vibrant blue scrolls depicting animals, Van Gogh's "Starry Night" interpretation, and indigo applique runners on the walls. An abstract, mystical blue installation captured the essence of openness and endlessness. Students engaged in musical performances against this artistic backdrop, creating a jubilant atmosphere.

The indigo exhibition at Akshar School not only celebrated the colour but also shed light on its incredible journey and cultural significance. Principal Mrs. Kavneet Khullar praised the effort, emphasising the importance of learning through such immersive experiences.
