Calcutta University on Thursday announced the revised intake capacity of each affiliated college following the implementation of reservation for students from the economically weaker section (EWS), which was introduced by the education department in May.

The university has listed the intake capacity of each course in a college for the four-year and the three-year undergraduate programmes.

In late June, CU enhanced the intake capacity for undergraduate courses by 22.2 per cent to ensure that the 10 per cent reservation for EWS students does not reduce the number of seats for general category students and seats reserved for other categories.

The intake capacity has increased in all 152 colleges affiliated to CU. The list mentioning the revised capacity has been put up on the university's website.

“We need to know what will be the exact intake scenario subject-wise and course-wise following the enhancement of the capacity by 22.2 per cent. This information should also be available to the undergraduate aspirants before they enrol,” said Debaish Das, registrar of Calcutta University. “We must maintain transparency."

A CU official said one of the purposes behind uploading the data on the university’s website is to ensure that no institution admits students in excess of the capacity.

He said the university had earlier received complaints that some colleges were admitting students in excess of their capacity under pressure from students' unions.

“We fear that in the name of the enhanced intake, because of the introduction of the quota for EWS students, these colleges could again attempt excess admission. This year the university, by uploading the data on intake, is seeking to curb any such attempt. The colleges must get a message that we are keeping a watch on the admission issues,” he said.

Joydeep Sarangi, principal of New Alipore College, said: “A college, whenever in doubt, could refer to the consolidated data CU has produced."
