Switzerland might mean snow-clad mountains and tranquil lakes for Indians but the country wants to change the perception.

From wakeboarding on Lake Zurich to tobogganing on Mount Pilatus, Hindi cinema’s favourite romantic spot is being showcased as the ultimate destination for those seeking adventure.

“Traditionally, Switzerland has always been a favourite romantic destination for Indians. But Swiss people love outdoor activities and the country is equally appealing to those seeking the adrenaline rush. We want to promote the other side of Switzerland to Indians,” Claudio Zemp, director, Switzerland Tourism India, said.

Zemp was in Calcutta to organise a roadshow and meet tour operators and industry partners in the city.

Riding a wakeboard towed behind a motorboat on Lake Zurich is one among the several options for tourists. Skydiving at Interlaken, a resort town in central Switzerland, counts high among adventure-seekers. It involves jumping from a helicopter and a free fall for around 50 seconds before a tandem master guides the parachute to a gentle landing — all with the majestic Swiss Alps in the backdrop.

Around 740,000 Indians visited Switzerland last year, a jump of more than 20 per cent over the previous year. “We are looking at 800,000 tourists this year,” Zemp said. India is the eighth most important market for Switzerland. The first three slots are occupied by Germany, the US and the UK.
