Organza, a multi-dimensional fabric, is also a stiff one, which is used to great advantage for layering of the gown or the skirt. This adds volume to the lower body. It is also used for making flared skirts in multiple layers. Layered lehengas are a perfect example of the use of organza in bridalwear and wedding wear.

Calcutta-based designer Shradha Manaktala's (in picture) new fall collection, ‘Anthaeum’, is inspired by flowers, and makes good use of organza.

Anthea, in Greek, means flowers, which Shradha uses as an expression of her love for flowers and for Indian embroidery, which, she reminds, is gaining in global appeal every day. Done in organza, the collection suits the mood and spirit of the festive season.

Since organza is so light and gives an ethereal appearance to the wearer, it can be accessorised with jewellery in precious metals and precious stones. Diamonds and platinum are ideal for garments that use organza prominently.

Shradha designs for the woman of today, who represents a certain idea in the designer’s mind. She is a woman who can multitask and is strong, while she is also soft and fragile like a flower. She carries herself with utmost grace. She is well-informed about the changing world around her. She loves to be experimental and flaunt her personality. She loves her femininity and displays her sense of style in an effective way.

The designer feels she specialises in cuts and drapes and the use the traditional Indian embroidery.

Every garment is a separate that can be teamed along with another outfit. The designs are versatile and can be worn and repeated on different occasions.

Organza, Shradha stresses, is so delicate and fine that it can snag very easily. Therefore be careful about your movements when you are wearing organza. When the organza dress is kept back in the closet, it should be wrapped in muslin with mothballs. But organza can be easily washed and ironed even though the material is stiff.

Organza can also be used in home décor, Shradha says. The material can be used as trimmings for lampshades or to make pouches for keeping jewellery or to be used as gift pouches for wedding guests or on special occasions.
