The much-awaited second chapter of the ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ theme at Met Gala, took place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night (early Tuesday in India). Helmed as fashion’s biggest night, this year’s Met Gala saw celebrities putting their best foot forward by adhering to the dress code of the night — Gilded Glamour. With Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as the official co-chairs and Tom Ford, Anna Wintour and Adam Mosseri as honorary co-chairs, this year’s Met Gala was definitely one of the most remarkable ones that oozed not only glamour but also a lot of effort behind it.
Co-chair of the latest edition of Met Gala, Blake Lively got the assignment right as the actress blended the theme and drama effortlessly. She wore a Atelier Versace tulle column dress in metallic bronze with a replica of the celestial map atop Grand Central Station that soon unfurled (with a little help from her team) to a oxidised green (think Statue of Liberty shade) gown that got everyone’s attention. Special mention for the crown she wore that was inspired by Lady Liberty and honouring her.
Corsets being one of the big trends back in the Gilded Age, singer Billie Eilish got the theme spot on as she walked in wearing a corseted Gucci gown complete with lace gloves, chokers and a fringed updo.
Wearing a pristine white Prabal Gurung number, singer Camila Cabello opted for a modern interpretation of the theme. “It’s completely sustainable, completely up-cycled and that was really important to me this year,” said the Senorita rocking the gown with flowers on it.
Megan Thee Stallion was wrapped in gold foil from Moschino. The outfit had cut-outs and head-turning feathered shoulder pads with a daring thigh-high slit, which she pulled off with panache. Megan for sure looked gilded!
Janelle Monae’s Ralph Lauren gown was pitch perfect because it honoured the duality of the Gilded Age that was basically known for corruption covered with gold and the glitters of the world. The monochromatic, beaded hoodie complete with red puckers definitely made her one of the best dressed.
Drawing inspiration from Empire State of Mind, Alicia Keys rocked a Ralph Lauren cape gown in black that had approximately 30,000 crystals depicting New York City’s staggering buildings and skyline. “My inspiration is our city. New York City forever...” said the singer, rocking a dramatic long braid wrapped with bejewelled discs.
Cardi B dripped in gold on the red carpet wearing a gold Versace dress covered in coins and chains from neck to toe! “Cardi B’s outfit is a high-voltage take on Gilded Age high-glamour... The full design seemingly gilds Cardi herself, a deserved indulgence for the artist whose debut album was certified gold on the exact day of its release on April 6, 2018,” the fashion label explained her look for the night.
Grammy winner Olivia Rodrigo looked like a cute butterfly fairy in a dazzling lavender Versace gown. It was interesting to see the teen sensation’s take on the theme where she mentioned that her look was based on the “opulence of the Gilded Age” in America. The cute butterfly clips, the glittery purple eye make-up and those loose locks, made her look ethereal.
A see-through black Moschino dress with a long train was Coachella queen Vanessa Hudgens’ OOTN that she paired with opulent diamond ornaments. “Vanessa Hudgens serving Gilded Gothic Witchy Romance...” posted her hairstylist Danielle Priano.
A red carpet pro, Gigi Hadid made her presence felt at the Met Gala red carpet in a heavily corseted-latexed and quilted Versace number in a similar shade that matched the red carpet, well almost. The supermodel’s catsuit and puffer jacket got the meme makers busy but Versace’s Instagram page clearly explained how the outfit was in sync with the theme — “The corset and the overexaggerated volume of the jacket confront each other in a decadent display of contrast inspired by the volume and dramatic change in womenswear silhouettes of late 1800s.”
Sarah Jessica Parker stepped back in time wearing a Christopher John Rogers ballgown in black and white that actually paid homage to the first Black female fashion designer to the White House, Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley. Kudos for the thought behind the look.
Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s fans woke up to go wow on Tuesday morning in India as the designer dressed Natasha Poonawalla for her Met Gala appearance. Natasha wore a Schiaparelli hand-forged metal bustier paired with a custom Sabyasachi couture sari and trail. “For me the sari is a truly unique and versatile garment that owns its identity even as it transcends boundaries and geographies. Back when I was a young fashion student, I often wondered when I would see the sari at big global fashion events like the Met Gala,” posted Sabyasachi on his Instagram. We cannot get over this futuristic-meets-traditional look.
