First COVID and then for the eastern part of the country, Amphan. It has been mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting. We have all, literally, been in the eye of the storm. So yes, it is but natural to be scared and worried.

But we cannot let paranoia rule our lives. We must take care of ourselves in practical and simple ways.

In COVID times, we are now going to be presented with a lot of fancy options. UV boxes for our belongings which claim to kill the germs. New and improved cleaning products. Sanitiser spraying machines for the home and offices. The works. At the same time it is essential that we be well-informed and keep basics in mind.

Note: Good old soap and detergents are good enough to destroy the coronavirus. Use them as before, in prescribed quantity.

Here are some things to remember about washing, to defend ourselves from the coronavirus and be infection-free in general.

1. Sunlight: Our friend in this war. After washing hang out the clothes to dry in the sun if you have that option. The UV rays have always been a good disinfectant.

For dark clothes, hang in shade but where there is air.

2. Water temperature: A lot is being said about the water temperature for the washing machine and regular hand washing. Warm water is ok, hot water long term damages fabric fibre. Therefore, cold water is best.

3. Disinfectant: A good disinfectant should be on every household's shopping list. Adding it to the detergent and water mix, and soaking clothes for about 15 minutes will take care of many germs. The old ones have not gone away because of COVID.

4. Baking soda: This makes the water alkaline. Because we will be washing clothes more often, baking soda helps to keep clothes softer, and its natural deodorising property makes clothes smell fresh. This can be done once in a while. The baking soda has to be mixed to the detergent mix.

5. Ironing: Heat kills germs. Ironing is highly recommended, by steam iron particularly. Steam is known to act as a natural disinfectant, it is known to remove allergens. One could look at portable options for steam irons. They also remove wrinkles easily.

The Non-Negotiables

1. Wearing the same piece of clothing twice, without washing it, is not advised. If one has been out, this is one rule that should be followed judiciously.

2. The laundry baskets/bags should be cleaned every day too. It doesn’t take much time. Two minutes extra.

3. High on the list would be disposable masks and gloves. Disposable gloves come in handy for ATM access or public transport.

If fabric masks are used, the same protocol should be followed as the clothes.

Everyday chores should not be a matter of anxiety but practice. With time, these simple practices will be of immense value. Let’s not sweat the small stuff, let’s wash instead.
