Tall and stunning. That’s Delhi girl Avanti Nagrath who became the first Indian model to open a show for fashion biggie Versace at the just-concluded Milan Fashion Week. Bold and confident strides marked Avanti’s walk. She took some questions from t2 on email post a memorable assignment.
Congratulations! This is huge! How did the Milan Fashion Week and Versace happen?
I’ve always wanted to be a model and my aspiration was to work with the big brands around world. So you could say I just kept chasing my dream.
Your walk was power-packed. What was going on in your mind right before the moment you walked on to the ramp?
Well, I just told myself do what you do best and forget the rest. I was super excited and just prayed that I don’t trip and gave it my best shot.
What were your feelings post-walk?
All sorts of emotions. I was thrilled and excited yet felt calm and at ease!
Who did you call first?
My mother.
What have you kept for yourself from the night for memories sake?
I don’t believe in keeping materialistic things but I have cherished every minute of the experience.
Anything Donatella Versace told you that you remember?
I remember her kindness and her positive energy and generosity.
Who else have you walked for in Milan?
Bottega Veneta.
Going back in time, how did modelling happen? How long have you been in the profession?
Modelling was something I always wanted to peruse ... I started when I was 16.
Who are your gurus/mentors?
Well, my mother for sure.
Who are your all-time favourite models?
Bella Hadid, Vittoria (Ceretti), Gigi Hadid.
How different are the Indian and international ramps?
Honestly, they aren’t much different. The process is the same!
What has been your biggest learning from this experience?
Being on time, long work hours and staying hydrated at all times!
How are you planning to maximise this moment in your career?
I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it, but I’m trusting the process and going with the flow .

At home! (I want to) just spend some quality time with family.
