Car sales rise 13 per cent in April

Due to low retail sales, there has been an inventory growth from 204,000 units to 251,000 units in the industry

The auto industry logged wholesale figures of 331,747 units in April against sales of 290,300 units a year ago, registering a growth of 12.9 per cent.

Retail sales stood at 285,700 units against April 2022-23 sales of 275,500 units, registering a growth of 3.5 per cent.

Due to low retail sales, there has been an inventory growth from 204,000 units to 251,000 units in the industry.

Retail sales have been slower in April. Customers have taken delivery during auspicious period during the month but sales have been invoiced in March.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) registered sales of 139,500 units over last April’s sales of 126,000 units, registering an 11 per cent growth.

Sales of mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, fell 18 per cent to 14,110 units as compared with 17,137 units a year ago.

MSIL lost volumes because of the continuing semiconductor crisis.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) registered domestic sales of 49 701 units and export sales of 8 500 units with cumulative sales of 58 201 units for the month of April 2023.

Tata Motors’ sales in the domestic and international markets for April 2023 stood at 69,599 vehicles compared with 72,468 units during April 2022.

Kia India reported a growth of 24 per cent for the period of January-April 2023 over the corresponding period last year and a 22 per cent year-on-year growth with 23,216 units in April 2023.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) registered sales of 14,162 domestic units in the month of April, 2023.

The company also exported 1,348 units of The Urban Cruiser Hyryder this month, thus clocking a total of 15, 510 units.

Honda Cars India on Monday reported a 33 per cent year-on-year decline in domestic sales at 5,313 units for April.

The company dispatched 7,874 units to dealers in the domestic market in April 2022.

Nissan Motor India said its domestic wholesales increased a 24 per cent year-on-year to 2,617 units in April.

MG Motor India reported an over two-fold rise in retail sales at 4,551 units last month as compared to the corresponding month last year.
