Dr, Dasgupta says, “The same surgery can be approached in three different ways, viz: Incision, laparoscopy and robot-assistance. All of these approaches are discussed with the patients and the procedure, to be followed, is determined.”
As Dr. Dasgupta puts it, “Incision has been the time-tested practice for any type of surgery, but it causes pain, the recovery time is considerable and it also causes indelible cut marks. Chances of infection and occurrence of hernia, in the future, cannot be ruled out. Hence, incision gave way to laparoscopy, which has now been a common practice for some time, for surgical requirements, due to its fast recovery time, meagre rate of complications and almost painless nature.”
Times are changing and so is medical technology, and with its advent robot-assisted surgery is picking up pace. Dr. Dasgupta says, “Artificial intelligence is the future. Robots are now capable of assisting surgeons by adding two more hands to their two. Robots assist by providing the surgeon with a camera control and a 3-D vision for analysing the depth of the organs. The surgery is also precise and painless, and blood loss is almost zero. If done properly, the patient can be discharged the next day following the surgery.”
“Robots are the future. With the help of robots, we can extract fibroids and endometriotic cysts. Oncological surgeries are also taken care of. There is no such surgery that cannot be robot-assisted”, she adds.
