Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest car maker, on Monday launched “mini SUV” S-Presso, priced between Rs 3.69 lah and Rs 4.91 lakh. Faced with muted sales over the last one year, the company is now banking on the new product to revive its fortunes during the festival period and beyond.

The mini SUV targets first-time buyers who prefer sports utility vehicles. The new model, which is based on the company’s fifth-generation HEARTECT platform, comes with a BS-VI compliant one-litre petrol engine.

“Today, compact is the natural choice of India’s car customers. At the same time, today is the age of disruptions. We realised that entry-level compact segment needs a fresh design language,” MSI managing director and chief executive officer Kenichi Ayukawa told reporters here.

“This caters to a very large segment, and people are looking at this kind of vehicle at this price point,” said Shashank Srivastava, executive director for sales and marketing at Maruti Suzuki.
